A finales del 2005, firman con Capitol Records y sacan a la luz The Crane Wife (2006),The Hazards of Love (2009) y The King Is Dead (2011).

small_english_resizeBike theft blossoms in summer due to lowering security standards urged by summery disinhibition and some heat-induced unconsciousness. That’s the matter with The Apology Song, today’s special at Clicks, Squeaks, Crackles, Rattles and Other Bike Noises

The Decemberists are an indie folk rock band from Portland, Oregon, fronted by songwriter Colin Meloy., nowadays backed by Chris Funk (guitar, multi-instrumentalist), Jenny Conlee (Hammond organ, accordion, keyboards, harmonica), Nate Query (bass guitar), and John Moen (drums, guitar and backing vocals).

the decemberists_2The band’s debut EP, 5 Songs, was self-released in 2001 and then published Castaways and Cutouts (2002) on Hush Records. Then the band signed to Kill Rock Stars and published the sucessful  albums Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003) & Picaresque (2005). By the end of 2005, signed to Capitol Records and released The Crane Wife (2006),The Hazards of Love (2009) and The King Is Dead (2011)

The Apology Song belongs to 5 Songs, the band’s debut EP. The members at that time played for several hours in a McMenamins hotel the night before to raise the money needed to record in the studio the next day: They recorded a demo tape with five songs on it (minus “The Apology Song”) in under two hours.

On The Apology Song, they apologized for having failed at keep the beloved bike of friend Steven that resulted stolen in the street when left unattended and even unlocked. A bittersweet story, pure band’s folk-rock and storytelling lyrics, with a catchy backing Hammond organ tune.

Carson Ellis, Colin Meloy’s fiancée, signs band’s original artwork, posters, etc… keep it in the family, Colin! And, of course, band’s name refers to the Decembrist revolt, an 1825 revolt in Russia (that poor Colin views as an failed early communist revolution).

Lyrics:

I’m really sorry Steven
But your bicycle’s been stolen
I was watchin’ it for you
‘Til you came back in the fall
Guess I didn’t do such a good job after allI was feeling really sorry Steven
And I spent all morning grieving
And everybody’s saying
That you’ll take the news gracefully
Somehow I don’t think I’ll be getting off that easilyI meant her no harm
When I left her unlocked
Outside the Orange Street Food Farm
I was just running in
Didn’t think I’d be that long
I came out, she was gone
And all that was there was some bored old dog
Leashed up to the place where your bicycle had been
Guess we’ll never see poor Madeleine againLet this be consolation, Steven
That all the while you were in England
I treated her with care and respect
And gave her lots of love
And I was usually pretty good ‘bout locking her upWhere has she gone?
Well, I bet she’s on the bottom of the Frenchtown Pond
Rudely abused on some hescher’s joyride
So I wrote you this song
In the hopes that you’d forgive me
Even though it was wrong
Being so careless with a thing so great
And taking your poor Madeleine away, away
